We are pleased to announce a successful completion of two day workshop on "High-temperature experiments and thermodynamic analysis of steelmaking reactions" held at IIT Bombay, sponsored by SCPP, IIT Bombay.
Day 1 of workshop (11 November, 2024): Inaugural Session and Student Presentations
Following the opening statement by Prof. Manish Pande, research students of Process metallurgy (IIT Bombay) presented their research work. The presentations resulted into a fruitful discussion among Prof. Youn-Bae Kang (POSTECH, South Korea) and the Faculty members and student. The comments and suggestions provided by Prof. Y. B. Kang during the discussion is highly appreciative.
Day 2 of workshop (12 November, 2024): Invited expert talk and visit to department facilities
On the day two, we had the honor of hosting an invited talk titled "Describing deoxidation equilibria of molten steel" by Prof. Youn-Bae Kang from Pohang University of Science and Technology (POSTECH), a renowned Professor and a leading expert of Metallurgical thermodynamics. The research interest of Prof. Kang encompass various important areas, including clean steel production, recycling of ferrous scrap, low-C emission hydrogen production, and theoretical solution thermodynamics. His research outcomes have garnered recognitions from prestigious societies such as TMS, ISIJ, AMS International, KIMM, CALPHAD, and NAEK.
Professor shared an invaluable knowledge on the thermodynamics of molten steel emphasizing on the thermodynamic modeling using various thermodynamic formalism and thermodynamic models. A compromise between the accuracy of the thermodynamic models and its practical applicability was shown. We extend heartfelt thanks to Prof. Y. B. Kang for his valuable time, sharing knowledge and incredible discussion.

Prof. Y. B. Kang (POSTECH, South Korea), a world's leading expert of metallurgical thermodynamics
We also thanks all the faculty members and student presenters making the event a success.

Talks giving by students are as follows:
Sree Lakshmi A. G. (PhD Student of Prof. Somnath Basu): Understanding the melting behavior and elemental transfer of CaF2 free fluxes in fusion welding of low carbon steel
Sandeep Kumar (PhD student of Prof. Deepoo Kumar): On the stability of CaS in liquid steel containing alumina or spinel inclusions
Sanjay Pindar (PhD student of Prof. Manish M. Pande): Formation of interfacial voids around silica inclusions in silicon-deoxidised steel during cooling
